ABOUT

My most impressive experience with watches: When Papa Nicolas G. Hayek sent me out of his office for 20 minutes because I, if I had properly prepared myself for our interview, I would have found the answer to a question I asked the grand seignior of the Swiss watch industry in the 102-page business report.

My most emotional experience with watches: When Jo Siffert, the former Swiss Formula One driver, suffered a fatal accident in Brands Hatch on October 24, 1971. A few months before he had sold me—a student with little pocket money—a Heuer Autavia Caliber 11 from the stock of his friend Jack Heuer for less than 400 francs.

My first experience with watches: As a little boy in the 1950s on a Sunday stroll through my native town on Luzern. I wanted to know what made the tourists so enthusiastic about watches that they were waiting in a long queue in front of Bucherer’s headquarters. Now I know. Only now the tourists in Luzern are Chinese and no longer Americans.
